DATES FOR
YOUR DIARY

One or more of our Member Societies are planning to man tables at the Family History Society Open Days, Regional Fairs, and other major events that are shown as 'Dates for your Diary'. On that page, Links are provided to the web-page of the organisers of the event, where available, for you to find out more information about it.

At the major Events such as the York Fair, either the Association itself or one of our Member Societies attending normally display leaflets for other Member Societies unable to attend that event. So visit the Welsh Society table(s) and see what's on offer.

The Association's Chairman manning tables at the Gwent FHS Open Day, one for the Association and another as the Regional Rep for Wales of the Guild of One-Name Studies (one of our members).

A Powerpoint presentation and talk on behalf of the Association (on the Surnames of Wales) being given at the Federation of Family History Societies' AGM in Llandudno in March 2010.

If you want to refer to a more comprehensive list of all the events in the coming months, visit GENEVA web-site (the joint GENUKI and FFHS diary of GENealogical EVents and Activities) which also includes links to find out more details of the events concerned.

THE ANNUAL "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? - LIVE" SHOW AT OLYMPIA

2009

The National Library of Wales NLW operated The Welsh Helpdesk (complete with daffodils) and their stand stood out alongside the big names of TNA, Ancestry.co.uk, and Times Archive - the photos are by courtesy of Beryl Evans of the NLW.

The Association's Chairman gave talks on "Family History in Wales", in the Regional Workshop organised by the Society of Genealogists (SoG), and tickets for his talks sold out very quickly with over 120 people attending them on each of the three days. He also spent a number of hours each day answering queries in the SoG's "Ask the Experts" area of the Show.

2010

The National Library of Wales (NLW) again ran its very popular "Welsh Helpdesk Stand", and Beryl Evans of the NLW and the Association's Chairman each gave talks on researching Family History in Wales. The Chairman also spent a number of hours each day answering queries in the SoG's "Ask the Experts" area of the Show. Glamorgan FHS and the Guild of One-Name Studies manned tables within the SoG's Family History section of the Show on all three days. Additionally within that section, Gwent FHS manned a table on the very busy Saturday, whilst the Association displayed leaflets on all three days for its other members unable to attend.

2011

Last minute problems prevented the Association's Chairman from attending.but Beryl Evans of the NLW stepped into the breach to fill his speaker's slots in addition to her own (as well as manning the NLW's Welsh Helpdesk), so there was a talk on Welsh Probate Records on all three days. The Association's Secretary, Menna Evans managed an Association stand on all three days, ably assisted by volunteers from the London Branch of the Welsh Family History Societies (see the picture on the right), and Glamorgan FHS also manned a number of tables on all three days.

HOBBYCRAFTS FAIR: CARDIFF INTERNATIONAL ARENA

Each year since 2006, the AFHSW has had a stand at the Creative Stitches & Hobbycrafts Fair in Cardiff International Arena, staffed by volunteers from Glamorgan FHS and Gwent FHS. The Fair organisers very kindly provide the facilities free of charge in the name of the Federation of Family History Societies since the Federation is a registered educational charity.

In return, the AFHSW gives a talk each afternoon on the attractions of Family History as a hobby. The event attracts over 8,000 visitors over its three days, and has therefore proved a rich source in attracting new family historians and persuading them of the benefits of joining their local family history society.

The stand displays leaflets from each of our member societies, including the Guild of One-Name Studies and the National Library of Wales, and from the local Record Offices. Our volunteers are kept busy giving advice and guidance to visitors on where to look and what to look for, in order to help them find the answers to their queries.

In 2009, our stand also displayed plans and photos of the new Gwent Archives office - which will open in its new home in Ebbw Vale early in 2011 - and of the new Glamorgan Record Office - which has since opened on the Leckwith development next door to the new Cardiff City Stadium and Capital Retail Park.
